Amita Kalia-Sharma, MD, is a board-certified Oncologist who specializes in functional and integrative medicine with a focus on Integrative Oncology. She’s part of the team of wellness providers at Functional, Integrative and Obesity Medicine, whose state-of-the-art wellness center is conveniently located in Ridgewood, New Jersey.
Dr. Kalia-Sharma completed pre-medical studies and graduated with honors from Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar, India. She stayed at Guru Nanak Dev University to earn her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree, graduating in the top of her class. She then relocated to the United States and passed all of her medical licensing exams on her first attempt.
Dr. Kalia-Sharma completed her residency in internal medicine at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, New Jersey, where she was honored with a best medical resident award and served as the chief medical resident during her final year. She went on to complete prestigious fellowships in Hematology and Oncology at Beth Israel Medical Center. She was practicing Hematology and Oncology at the Valley hospital, Ridgewood, NJ until 2013, When she suffered herself from Glioblastoma. During her recovery from GBM, she herself explored the different causes of cancer, and alternative therapies to live with and beyond cancer. Being a cancer survivor of this deadly disease, she pursued further studies and completed two year fellowship in integrative medicine at the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona. Her motivation is to help other cancer patients, and their care givers, to live a meaningful, stress free life and ways to prevent recurrence, with her experience and professional expertise.
Dr. Kalia-Sharma is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, with certified subspecialties in Oncology, and Hospice and Palliative Medicine. She’s been published in various respected medical journals, and stays active in her field as a member of the American Association of Oncology, American Institute of Functional Medicine, and Academy of Integrative Health Medicine.
